Challenge

Nitrogen flushing is widely used in food packaging to replace Oxygen (O2), reducing oxidation and extending product shelf life. However, even a small amount of residual Oxygen inside the sealed package could accelerate food deterioration and affect product quality.

They required a reliable method to accurately measure the N₂ concentration inside small sealed packages without significantly affecting the internal gas environment. Because the packaging samples were only approximately 10 x 6 x 3 cm, conventional gas sampling methods could easily disturb the gas balance or cause excessive gas loss during testing.

Solution

After analyzing the customer’s requirements, GasDog recommended the GD200-N2 portable pump-suction Nitrogen gas detector, customized for food packaging gas analysis.

To meet the special requirements of small sealed packages, GasDog engineers optimized the sampling method:

  • A fine-needle sampling structure was added to the front air inlet/outlet, allowing gentle penetration into the packaging without causing major damage.
  • The pump flow rate was adjusted to extract only a small amount of gas, ensuring accurate N₂ measurement while minimizing changes to the internal atmosphere.
  • The Nitrogen detector samples the gas inside the package, analyzes the Nitrogen concentration through the N2 sensor, and returns the gas to the package to help maintain the original pressure and composition.

This customized approach allowed the customer to verify Nitrogen purity while preserving the integrity of the food packaging environment.

Result

After receiving the customer’s packaging samples, GasDog technicians performed the test on the same day and recorded the complete testing process.
