Case Study: Portable Formaldehyde (CH2O) Detection for Art Coating
A high-end art coating brand established in 1997 specializes in the R&D, production and application of decorative art coatings. With a large-scale production base and multiple environmental certifications, the company places strong emphasis on product safety and environmental performance.
To help customers better understand the Formaldehyde performance of its coatings, the company's headquarters wanted to equip all its stores with portable Formaldehyde detectors.
Challenge
The customer had two main requirements:
- How to accurately measure Formaldehyde from open display samples?
- How to control equipment costs while maintaining reliable measurement accuracy?
Because coating samples displayed in stores were exposed to open air, Formaldehyde would not easily accumulate around the sample. A simple open-air measurement could therefore make it difficult to demonstrate changes in concentration. At the same time, with a large number of stores to equip, the detector needed to be cost-effective while providing reliable measurement performance.
Solution
After evaluating the application, GasDog recommended the GD200-CH2O portable Formaldehyde detector with a 0–10 ppm range and a pumped sampling system. GasDog proposed a simple enclosed testing method: the coating sample and Formaldehyde-removal solution were placed inside a transparent test chamber, with a small opening at the bottom. The detector used silicone tubing to circulate the air inside the chamber and continuously monitor the Formaldehyde concentration.
An imported sensor was selected for the detector, with a stated accuracy of ±3% FS. The instrument was also submitted for testing and passed the customer's required verification. The headquarters initially purchased three units for evaluation. After comparing the measurement results, the customer recognized the detector's performance and approved the solution.
Result
The customer subsequently incorporated the detector information into its internal store support system, including product images, test reports and contact information. Since 2021, whenever new stores require Formaldehyde testing equipment, the customer has continued to recommend GasDog as its supplier.
This long-term cooperation demonstrates how a practical testing method and suitable portable detector can help turn environmental performance into something customers can see and understand directly.

Key Takeaway
For open coating displays, the key is not simply choosing a Formaldehyde gas detector, but creating a controlled sampling environment that makes concentration changes easier to observe and compare.
